Desktop, laptop, tablet and phone

Lumen Tool is designed first for a desktop or laptop. That gives the studios enough screen space and makes moving lights, models and controls much easier.

Modern tablets can also work well in many parts of Lumen Tool. A phone may load some tools, but Lumen Tool is not designed as a phone workspace and the controls can feel cramped on a small screen.

In simple terms

You do not need a special workstation or gaming PC. A reasonably modern Windows PC or Mac with a current browser is usually enough.

As a simple starting point, aim for 8 GB of memory (RAM) or more. 16 GB is better if you want to work with larger 3D scenes or several detailed models at once.

A separate graphics card is not required. Recent built-in graphics from Intel, AMD or Apple are fine for normal use.

Lumen Tool runs directly in your browser. There is nothing to install. You do need an internet connection to open Lumen Tool, sign in and use The Archive.

The heavier 3D tools ask more from your computer. Set Builder is one example, so an older or very basic laptop may feel slower there than in the lighter studios.

Technical specifications

For anyone who wants the more exact details:

  • Windows: Windows 10 or 11.
  • Mac: macOS 13 Ventura or newer.
  • Browser: the latest Chrome is the safest general choice. Edge is also recommended on Windows. Current Safari works on recent Macs.
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM minimum recommended, 16 GB preferred for heavier 3D work.
  • Graphics: hardware acceleration should be enabled. WebGL 2 support is required for the 3D studios; newer browsers can also use WebGPU where available.
  • Processor: a modern 64-bit processor with around four cores or more is a good starting point.
  • Internet: a stable broadband connection is recommended, especially on the first visit while 3D files are being loaded.

Apple Silicon Macs such as M1 and newer are a very good fit. Intel Macs can still work if they can run a current supported browser, but more demanding 3D scenes may be slower.
