Light controls

Updated September 8, 2026

In the free tool, Key Light is the one fully usable light. Fill Light, Back Light and Hair Light are visible there, but they unlock in Lumen Tool Studio.

Intensity

Controls how bright the light is. A stronger Key Light usually creates a clearer shadow structure; in Studio, a weaker Fill Light can soften that contrast.

Kelvin

Controls color temperature. Lower values look warmer. Higher values look cooler.

Height

Moves the light up or down. This changes how shadows fall across the face. Like distance, the values are relative to the scene, not centimetres or inches.

Angle

Moves the light around the subject horizontally. This strongly affects the lighting pattern.

Distance

Moves the light closer or farther away. The values are relative, not literal studio measurements.

Softness

Higher softness gives smoother shadow transitions. Lower softness gives a harder look. It is one combined control for how soft the light behaves in the scene, so the percentage is a setting in the tool, not the size of a real softbox.

Gels

In Lumen Tool Studio you can put a gel colour on a light. Gels here are simple colour filters on the light: they change the colour you see, and they are not a simulation of a specific gel brand or of the light a real gel swallows.
