Light controls

Photo Lighting and Artist Lighting use four lights. Key is the main light that shapes the face. Fill lifts the shadow side. Back and Hair light the subject from behind or above to separate it from the background.

Each light has the same controls:

• Intensity: how strong the light is.
• Kelvin: color temperature. Lower is warmer, higher is cooler.
• Height: moves the light up or down.
• Angle: moves the light around the subject.
• Distance: moves it closer or farther away. As with a real lamp, twice as far gives a quarter of the light, two stops less.
• Softness: how soft or hard the shadow edges are.
• Gel: adds a colored filter, in Advanced mode.

Work one step at a time: set the Key first, then decide how much Fill, Back or Hair light the picture needs. Or start from a preset and refine from there.
